He challenged all comers, two at a time, playing Paper, Rock, Scissors.
One kid on each side, best two out of three, simultaneously. He won every time.
It was a game of chance, not skill, but he never lost. This is how he became known as Lucky.
But it wasn’t luck, it was something else. The way the wind shifted. The way the light hit the puddle near the merry-go-round. The smell of the pine trees. The fact that it was a leap year.
Lucky was born in a leap year. Officially he was only 4 years old.
As he finished the game, he narrowly missed being hit by a car and found $200 dollars on the way home.
